At Laser Eye Center of Carolina, to provide the highest quality custom LASIK to our Raleigh / Durham patients, our Cary practice is equipped with the latest in laser vision correction technology. And, make no mistake; the type of laser your doctor uses can dramatically affect your level of satisfaction with LASIK. Dr. Dean Dornic has invested in technology that not all vision correction surgeons use, but he knows that the results are well worth it.
The first step in custom LASIK for our Raleigh / Durham patients is measuring the eyes to determine how much corneal material must be removed to provide the best possible vision. Dr. Dornic understands that everyone's eyes are unique and is one of an elite group of eye surgeons who now offer their patients the benefits of the VISX® CustomVue™ system, the new standard in measurements for vision correction. CustomVue™ allows him to analyze your eyes’ specific irregularities with 25 times more accuracy than standard measurements used for glasses and contacts. With this system, Dr. Dornic can actually treat more than simple nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism. He can provide truly custom LASIK at our Cary practice, with the potential for you to have better vision than you ever had with contacts or glasses, along with reduced glare and improved night vision for many.
At the 2003 American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery Symposium & Congress in San Francisco, clinical data were presented showing that, at one year following the procedure, 98 percent of the participants who had CustomVue™ could see 20/20 or better, with nearly 70 percent seeing better than 20/20 without glasses or contacts. A six-month evaluation of clinical study participants showed that four times as many people were very satisfied with their night vision after the VISX CustomVue™ procedure, compared to their night vision before with glasses or contacts.
The IntraLase® laser is the latest technology available for creating the corneal flap for LASIK. Most surgeons use a metal blade, called a microkeratome, for this first step in the procedure. Statistically, cutting the flap with the microkeratome presents the highest risk for complications. Using the IntraLase® laser to make the flap, rather than a blade, can significantly reduce the risk of certain flap complications.
In addition to the reduced risk of infection, the IntraLase® produces a much more precise corneal flap, with more uniform thickness and a more uniform surface on the stroma below, making precise tissue removal easier.
Iris registration from VISX® is another big step in guaranteeing the
accuracy of LASIK surgery. Recently approved by the FDA, this technology
scans the patient’s iris and provides an accurate starting point for
the CustomVue™ guidance system as it directs the Star S4-IR™ Laser.
The CustomVue™ system, which provides measurements of the eye’s irregularities on a scale previously unknown, is used with the patient in a sitting position; the Star S4-IR™ Laser operates with the patient in a reclined position. The iris registration device records the image of the iris in extreme detail while the patient is sitting, and is then used to align the laser when the patient is reclined for the surgery. Iris patterns are more detailed and unique than fingerprints, ensuring perfect alignment of the laser for the most accurate LASIK procedure possible.
To complement the advanced measurement capabilities of the CustomVue™ Dr.
Dornic uses the VISX® Star S4-IR™ Laser for custom LASIK at our Cary
practice. The Star S4-IR™ uses the CustomVue™ data to help guide
the doctor’s hands in providing the most precise LASIK surgery possible.
The Star S4-IR™ has many exclusive features, including:
• Variable Spot Scanning (VSS) – Produces seven variable sized treatment beams, offering greater flexibility for faster, smoother procedures.
• 3D ActiveTrak™ – Automatically tracks the subtle movement of your eyes in all three dimensions, providing additional control and precision.
Thanks to these VISX® integrated systems technologies, we can to provide a safer, more precise, truly custom LASIK procedure for our Raleigh / Durham patients.
