Myopia Treated with Verisyse™ or Intacs® at Our Cary Practice

Dr. Dean Dornic offers two kinds of implantable contacts as alternatives to laser surgery for his patients with myopia, or nearsightedness: Verisyse™ phakic intraocular lenses (IOLs), for moderate to severe cases, and Intacs® corneal ring segments for mild myopia. Both devices are implanted through tiny incisions in the eye, with no tissue removal required.

Verisyse™ Phakic IOL

The Verisyse™ Phakic IOL is well suited to our Raleigh / Durham / Cary-area patients who want to correct moderate to severe myopia without laser surgery. The term “phakic” refers to an implanted lens that supplements, rather than replaces, the eye’s natural lens. The Verisyse™ is known as an implantable contact lens because, like a normal contact lens, it fits in front of the natural lens and corrects the refractive error that causes nearsightedness. The difference is that there is no maintenance, since the Verisyse™ IOL becomes part of the eye. If, at a later time, other changes to the patient’s vision require a different solution, the Verisyse™ is removable.

Using the Verisyse™ IOL at our Raleigh / Durham / Cary-area clinic requires no tissue removal, since it is placed between the cornea and the natural lens. Dr. Dornic makes a small incision at the edge of the cornea and inserts the lens, which is attached to the iris. Once the placement is finished, the incision is closed with microscopic sutures that dissolve on their own. The procedure usually takes no more than 30 minutes. Afterward, the patient wears a protective eye cover during the early stage of recovery.

Intacs® Corneal Ring Segments

Intacs® are well suited to our Raleigh / Durham-area patients who want to correct mild myopia (nearsightedness) without laser surgery. These small, crescent-shaped corneal ring segments flatten the front of the eye, thereby reducing myopia.

To place Intacs®, Dr. Dornic first numbs the eye with medicated eye drops, and then makes a small incision above the cornea. Next, he inserts a ring segment on each side of the inner cornea. Typical Intacs® placement at our Cary practice takes about 15 to 20 minutes.

Unlike laser surgery, no removal of eye tissue is required with Intacs®. This allows our Raleigh / Durham-area patients to have other vision correction treatments, if required. If the patient is dissatisfied with his/her vision, existing Intacs® can be removed and replaced with a different thickness for further correction, or removed altogether to allow for another form of vision correction surgery, such as LASIK or PRK.

Unlike laser eye surgery, the Intacs® procedure results in new parts in the eye, but patients report that they cannot feel them. If there is no change in vision, the Intacs® will never need any further attention.
