Providing Exceptional LASIK Surgery Results for Raleigh / Durham

Every patient who chooses Laser Eye Center of Carolina for his or her vision correction procedure gets the "VIP" treatment. Dr. Dean Dornic and his staff do everything possible to ensure the success and safety of their treatment.

At Laser Eye Center of Carolina, we believe that LASIK surgery for our Raleigh / Durham patients requires aseptic (sterile) conditions. Did you know that some eye surgeons still perform their procedures in street clothes and bare hands? Why not insist that risks be minimized?

To ensure only the safest LASIK surgery for our Raleigh / Durham patients, each receives both preoperative and postoperative antibiotic eye drops. In addition, every member of the surgical team wears scrubs, surgical masks, caps, and gloves. Whenever possible, disposable, rather than reusable, supplies are used. In addition, we are one of the few centers in the region to utilize the Cox dry heat sterilizer, which is felt to significantly reduce the risk of infection and inflammation.

Other features of the center that may be less obvious but still contribute significantly to a positive patient experience include state-of-the-art topography equipment and a climate-controlled laser room, in which both temperature and humidity are regulated to ensure stable laser operating room conditions and results that are more predictable. Our treatment protocol also includes testing the laser and other instruments between every single laser procedure. We constantly track our results in an effort to make sure that we continue to provide the level of excellent vision that patients have come to expect from us.

Steps & Process

Most often, LASIK surgery candidates from the Raleigh / Durham area first come to our center for a complimentary, no-obligation consultation. At this visit we will take some preliminary measurements to see if your vision could be improved with refractive surgery. You will meet with Dr. Dean Dornic, who will discuss the procedure, the risks and benefits, and talk to you about what you should expect from the procedure. After the most appropriate procedure is selected for you, you will be provided information on cost, payment options, and scheduling.

Intake Interview

Certain conditions may make you a poor candidate for refractive surgery. You should not have refractive surgery if you are pregnant. Patients with a history of advanced glaucoma, active lupus, or past episodes of herpes simplex eye infections are also not good candidates. During the intake interview you will be asked about these conditions as well as others that may influence the procedure we select for you.

Measurements and Data Gathering

To determine the appropriate goals for your LASIK surgery, we will analyze your eyeglasses and measure the current amount of nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism. A corneal topography (a detailed map of the surface of your eye) will be performed. Other tests performed will include measurements of your pupil size and corneal thickness, a tear film evaluation, and a confirmation of your eye health. All of these tests are necessary to assist us in choosing a customized treatment approach and in determining if refractive surgery is appropriate for you.

Tips

Unfortunately, not all LASIK surgery providers have your best interest at heart. It is easy to be intimidated by someone who portrays himself or herself as an expert. Our advice to you is: "Don’t be afraid to ask questions."

To begin your search for an ophthalmologist to discuss your vision correction options, first ask your friends, family, and coworkers for recommendations. No one will be more honest than someone who has already gone through the process.

Don’t be afraid to take the time to get a recommendation from more than one surgeon. If you are told something different in your second (or third) evaluation, don’t hesitate to contact the previous doctor and inquire.

During the consultation, you’ll want to know:

Make sure you are comfortable with the answers to these and any other questions you may have before deciding to have a vision correction procedure with a particular provider. You shouldn’t feel pressured to make a quick decision in order to get a good deal.
